music @ Temporary Services
Temporary Services is a small exhibition/meeting/eating/talking/listening
space that is opening on the North West Side of Chicago in December 1998.
Temporary Services seeks to create an environment that fosters discussions
and hanging out in the midst of art, music and ideas. Temporary Services will
present exhibitions of artwork, books, magazines, music, plants, food...
The main goal of Temporary Services is to continually present art in an
expanded context and to broaden definitions of art and art making to the
point where it is no longer recognized as art.
A crucial part of presenting art in an expanded manner is submerging it
in music, sound and audio art. Temporary Services will be wired with several
points (equipped with 2-4 sets of headphones each) that are connected to
a single listening station in its video/media 'closet'. The listening
station will consist of a 5CD-changer. Many different projects are possible
with the CD-changer. It can be used to present audio exhibitions curated
by individuals who are deeply connected to a particular kind of music/audio
making. It can also be a venue for the presentation of an individual
body of work or for a piece that is made specifically for the 5CD-changer.
It is important that a wide range of music, sound, and noise be presented.
Temporary Services seeks to present previously unreleased material and
works in progress. Temporary Services will only sell work if asked to do
so. All work that is submitted for exhibition at Temporary Services will
not be used in any other manner than specified by the artist/musician.
There is a strong commitment to supporting the economic interests of
individuals working on the margins of their field and a respect for that
will be maintained.
