WARNING: Long, self indulgent message to follow -- complete with thoughts, playlist, thanks, spelling errors and textual shout outs. ...you might just want to delete now :) program: music for lunchpails time: wednesday 6-9pm frequency: 88.9fm online: kuci.org winamp: http://www.kuci.org:8000 host: crztfr.rbn slow contact: kuci . po box 4362 . irvine . ca . 92616-4362 fast contact: 949.824.5824 nice contact: tofu@uci.edu Welp. Tonight was the last night for a fairly big part of my life that started in the fall of '93 with the music program "Amphetamine Lunchpail" and carried on with several name changes until now: music for lunchpails on error off air lnch.pl.e.rotic.x.fix.e.ation darkest gothgirl in heaven darkest lunchpail in heaven pleasant tasting syrup pleasant tasting lunchpail cuddlenoise experience I really appreciate all the folks that have helped/inspired the show over the years -- especially the listeners that have stuck with the program and the bands/labels that have provided insight, support and all around insane music! I am going to make some attempt with the extra time I will have (and hopefully money I will save, though it is not going to be easy as I am a music addict ) to carry through with some music/sound collage ideas I have had over the years. Guess we'll see how that one goes. Just to clear up something: I am only ending the show, not my affiliation with KUCI or my involvement with the program "Riders of the Plastic Groove." I will still be working with Kyle on ROTPG as long as we get to continue doing live remotes for the public to attend. I hope to also to incorporate more of the sounds/bands that have been featured on the Lunchpail show into the live remotes of ROTPG. Tonight's program was dedicated to all those folk I have shared a show with over the years, specifically Kat (who did Amphetamine Lunchpail with me at one point) and Ray (who was my first show partener on the industrial show that led me into the show now)... but also to Brian (hmstrznd'ldhsn) and Brother Dan. Final Music for Lunchpail Playlist 03.29.00: dcoh: lnch.pl.e.rotic.x.fix.e.ation theme [unreleased] Extremely cheesey noodlings that I made one night at my friend Alex's house. I think he's the one who acted as a catalyst in getting me to attempt to carry through with some of my music ideas. For Richie + Alex + Stu. milk cult: hawaiian motorcycle joyride - act 1 & 2 & ambient obituary project m-13 [revolver] Milk Cult is an offshoot of the rock band Steel Pole Bath Tub - one of the most intense live guitar type bands I have ever seen! Milk Cult + Steel Pole Bath Tub have been favorties of mine since my earliest show at KUCI (Amphetamine Lunchpail, first time around). Milk Cult is amazing collage material - super low fi, but perfectly put together. I find it fitting that they released a new CD just in time for the final show. For Adrienne. steel pole bath tub: train to miami the miracle of sound in motion [boner] Not new, but my favorite rock song! I hadn't heard this song for years and it was STILL stuck in my head. For Brian + Lisa B. potuznik: the elevator stopped concorde+ [cheap] Concorde+ is the kind of album I think works best as a whole. In style it reminds me A LOT of Nurse With Wound's "Who Can I Turn to Stereo". This track by itself though is such a fitting bit of dialogue for the last few years of my life. Potuznik is this shit anyway! One of the most diverse and fun "IDM" producing peeps I have heard. I just hope he does not fall into the pit of emulating bad 80's music to the point of no distinction... On "Concorde+" he teams up with several people, including Ramon Bauer. Bauer is affiliated with the label Mego and a ton of brilliant projects. For PJ + Davenoise + Chowderhead + SP + John + Lynn + Glenn + Ron + Lob + all who feed my music addiction in some way. autechre remixing merzbow: ecobondage (ending) [mute] I have been waiting and waiting for that Coil/Autechre collaboration to come out - but really, I think this little gem fills that void nicely! What a perfect marriage between the IDM world and noise - and a wonderful song to open people of the noise world up to IDM and vice-versa. Based on the collaboration alone, I would have expected this to sound more like Navy Warship era Phthalocyanine.. which is also wonderful! For Brock + Gil for the time they lectured me on the front porch. nurse with wound: tune time machine who can i turn to stereo? [united daries] This is just obligatiry. How could I NOT play Nurse With Wound? I chose this slightly older song because it is the opening track of what I consider to be one of the best albums ever. For Jason. richie devine: (b1) ischemic folks [schematic] I think for this song Richie set himself up to be abducted by aliens so that he could record them running about in their spaceship. No... Really. What other explanation is there? Regardless of his method, Richie is one of the sickest musicians around and has put together some of the craziest material for an electronic live performance I have ever heard. kid606 remixing the locust: ? [soon to be released i assume] Hardcore will never die. No really, I am serious. I love it! The show took a small direction change when I found a release from Spacewurm called "Experimentations in Intelligent Gabber." I began to look towards some of the hardcore producers for new ideas and music. I found some of the best ideas in sounds from labels like Praxis and Ambush. A little later I happend upon the music of Kid 606 (who was in Spacewurm) and have been excited about his music ever since! Oddly enough (and completely independent of the Lunchpail show), Kid606 hooked up with the hardcore (Punk) band The Locust, featuring KUCI war hero Joey. Happy! For Tom + Joey + JJ + Jackie + Maria angels of light: song for my father new mother [young god] There is something about this song that is wonderfully intense! Michael Gira is an artist that really has won my heart over -- from the sickness of early Swans to the recent mellow (but somehow still as intense as can be) work of his new project "Angels of Light". Even when my radio show focussed more on electronic music, I always found the extensive work of the Swans worthy of coming back to. I really cannot relate to this song on a "Father" level, there is something about it that really hits home. For her + Bill B. brad laner/electric company: quantitation of mrna by polymerase [from mp3] I thought I had been following Brad's material since the introduction of his project The Electric Company. Much later, however, I found out he did some work on some of my favorite songs from Savage Republic. So really, Brad has been producing material that has kept my attention since well before I started hosting the show - and I expect he will continue to do so for a long time. This particular song was taken from mp3 (http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/39/electric_company.html). phoenecia: ? [unreleased?] I am not sure what this song is or where it came from. All I know is it arrived in my hand via an anonymous laptop rocker and has not surfaced on any Phonecia related releases. Whatever it is, it is damn fine and somehow makes me think of Depeche Mode's Pipeline. I owe many hours of good music on my show to Josh and Rom - from the early excessive play of "Little Alien" (as Soul Oddity), to their solo/side projects, to the recent love inspired Schematic compilation "Lily of the Valley." Easily two of my favorite artists/people. For Gary. dave wright: academic noize illuminati unveiled the special album [instant shoggoth] I debated playing Dave's goofy and brillliant version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky", but for some reason this song "Academic Noize Illuminati Unvieled" jumped out at me. It really is an odd little song and reminds me a lot of just how soft and then harsh his work can be. Dave normally performs with Not Breathing, a band that gently (or not so genlty) rocked me along through my industrial days and has since released material that far surpasses other bands I was listening to at that time. Not Breathing is easily one of the most overlooked yet most talented bands recording music today, and I hope one day things come together nicely for the kind folk... For Cyn + Tom Sunstrok + Lob + Tekachi + John L electric skychurch: full moon generator [self released] This has to be the perfect song to bring the "rave" side of my show full circle! Watching the sunrise after an intense night out in the desert and then being assulted by an insane variety of music in the morning has to be one of the best things. Thanks to Moontribe, I got to have that experience many a time over. Oddly, this song sounds more like something I would expect from Herbert/RadioBoy -- but it wonderfully reflects those crazy times and I am tickled to death thatit came from a person like James Lumb. For Joachin + SC Raves + James + Pete + Brian + Daniel + Jhymn + all w/ Moontribe. cathars: avian maria ricci's pieces [mindfield/faqt] I first saw Kurt Ralske when he performed with Ultra Vivid Scene, who at the time were opening up for Ian McCulloch. Soon after I found some UVS material and fell in love. Fairly recently a friend pointed out his recent work under the name "Cathars". Beautiful stuff! This particular song is from an odd little compilation that pays tribute to Christina Ricci. For Christina. terre thaemlitz: program a [a-muzak] Terre is an incredible artist that has held my attention since I first heard that odd little "beep" in Hovering Glows (which at the time grabbed my attention in similar ways to "Spy in the Cab") . He was one of the first "ambient" artists to be played on my show (along with Aphex Twin and FSOL)... mostly because there was something so amazing about the way he combined sounds (KILL KILL KILL) - and it all just keeps getting more and more interesting.. This 7", surprisingly enough, came out by way of one of my favorite labels: A-Musik (well, under the silliness of "a-muzak") For Andy T + Dana + anyone who can get Terre to perform in Socal. negativland remixing people like us hate people like us [staalplaat] It's not even funny. do you know... For Mig + Milo + Fetish. jj perrey: groovy leprechauns at home with the groove box [grand royal] Goofy and brilliant is a hard combination to successfully reach, but this man, along with G. Kingsley, seems to still have the touch. I first was exposed to their work via the CD "The Essential Perrey and Kingsley" (Vanguard) while on a trip of some kind. Later I found out Kingsley was actually resonsible for the "Popcorn" song that we had to do a little dance to in grade school. Since then, of course, I have seen groovy artists like Aphex Twin, M-Ziq, Stereolab, Hafler Trio, and Neotropic sample them. This song from JJ Perrey comes from some odd compilation that also features a new version of Kingsley's "Popcorn" and Sonic Youth covering the sounds of a campfire (Sonic Youth is a band that most likely should have been played on this show..) For Rosco + Mig + Milo. skylab 2000: smile loraine [peach] Skylab 2000 have remained one of the most fun and entertaining acts I have seen. They carry over the Happy Mondays type aesthetic nicely into the the electronic music setting. Slylab 2000's "Smile," along with Land of the Loops' "Multi-family Garage Sale" and Soul Oddity's "Little Alien," will always make me happy and giddy! It will also remain in my memory as the perfect song that brought me in to in the year 2000 (in the most wonderful of company I must add). For B-Sides. kidlex: badspeak [unreleased brilliance] 23 seconds of some of the best music I have ever heard. Ah well. So it goes. For Michael and Alex. lexaunculpt: samus [unreleased] Metroid was one of my favorite games as a kid, so it seems quite appropriate that Lexaunculpt did the perfect remake/remix of the theme song. For whatever reason I have been out of touch with Alex, but I look forward to changing that in the near future. I think us snotty so-cal kids are quite lucky to have such a talented artist in our own backyard. Alex also had a secret hand in influencing some of the musical choices for the show (Ryoji Ikeda is a fine example). Thanks! For Daniel + Tom P + Fran. in a lonely place: new dawn fades unit 731 [burnt toast/velvet blue music] This wins as one of the oddest things I am chosing to play for the final show. Daryl is in a very Mary Chain influenced post punk band called Upside Down Room -- a band I used to see all the time as a young, innocent kid. Recently I ran into him at the Marc Almond show (one of 2 I attended). He came up to the radio show and brought me some amazing new material he has been working on under the name In a Lonely Place. To match his project name and my lingering goth girl obsession, I am choosing to play his cover of Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades". Talk about bringing things full circle... YIKES! But it really is a great honor and a wonderful bit of music! For Lori + Robert. instagon: bela kona [sheep hole records] The local noise monster has recenlty taken on a new form: structure. What a joy it has been! While I appreciate the intense chaos of the early days of instagon (a band that was on the show many times in back in the day), there is something wonderful about the direction the Lob and company are going now. This is of course a Bauhaus cover and seems perfect for the end of a show originally named for those beautiful goth girls and their amazing lunchpails. For Bethany + any nice folks I met at Jams. babyland: back of love workers comp [headlock society] While I have not played Bablyland all that much on my shows over the years I do try to catch them live whenever I can. They are so much fun, and no other band puts on a show quite like them. This particular song is a cover of a Bunnymen classic.. can't go wrong. For Josh. mimir: (b1) [streamline 1012] Jim O'Rourke is a small hero to me. He has created so much music, and it is all so very different and diverse. From his work with Illusion of Safety to his solo work (both folk and abstract electronic), he rarely fails to disappoint. Then there is the Legendary Pink Dots -- one of the most psychadelic and remarkable bands ever! They keep me at close ties with my goth roots, but I love them anyway! Christoph Heeman is someone I only recently discovered through his work with Current 93, but he is an artist that I will be paying attention to for a long time to come! Mimir offers up contributions from all these artists... Need I say more? For Bill + Kat. mouse on mars: download sofist niun niggung [sonig/rough trade] This song is short, but so perfect... a lot more subtle than other Mouse on Mars tracks, it nicely combines the electronic manipulation with the soothing sounds of an acoustic guitar. Mouse on Mars remain through all their releases (except maybe the first..?) diverse, insane and quite cute! I cannot wait to see where these guys go in the future, especially given the output of such side projects as Lithops, Microstoria, and Esognomig. The 20 minute or so collaboration with Stereolab when the two bands played together in LA was a bit of music that I will never forget. aphex twin: perc #6 or some computer music [or] Where did this come from? No, really.. I like RDJ and all and his music has found a nice comfortable place on my show... but this song has to be one of the BEST things I have heard from anyone recently. It is the kind of stuff I think Bryn Jones/Muslimgauze (RIP) would have ended up producing had his life lasted a little longer... Too bad this is supposed to be one of the last bits of music to come from RDJ. For the trainspotters. muslimgauze: catacomb dub lo fi india abuse [bsi] Hello. Hi. Yes, I am a Muslimgauze junkie. I cannot get enough. No one quite captures the sound that Bryn Jones has... I am playing this song on the final show for a few reasons. First, I would like to give one last little blessing to an incredible artist that recently passed on. Second, this was some of the final material he worked on, and I like to think that it might inspire people to continue where he left off. Silly, yes, but so is everyting I do, so that's okay! For Bryn Jones. plastikman: afrika [minus] Richie Hawtin remains one of my favorite producers -- everything he touches seems to turn to gold, especially in a live context. This track is fairly recent, though not extremely new. It does however reflect 2 sides of techno that I very much appreciate: minimal and world influenced. For Steve. fenno'berg: horst und snail mit markus the magic sound of fenno'berg [mego] Christian Fennesz. Peter Rehberg. Jim O'Rourke. Jesus Christ. Well, maybe not Jesus, but I sure if he came back he would be just as overjoyed at this collaboration as I am. Three artists, each that have recieved quite a bit of play on the show, all together on one CD. I could cry. Please, someone make something like this CD happen again. spastic colon: sc perninium injection moonlanding vol 1 [helicopter] Local noise act that has entertained me countless times in both a live and recorded context. The fellow behind this project, Jorge, has run a very slick noise label, maintained a very valuable calendar, opened a venue in So-California for people of like minded musical flavoring (it has since gone bye bye, but still was goovy!) and... most important, he keeps sneaking out the little bits of groovy sound. Thanks! This particular song comes from the Moonlanding series on the excellent label Helicopter. For Jorge + John W + All the noiseheads. lustmord remixing phthalocyanine plug research and development [plug research] Brian Lustmord is an artist that has been involved in so many things I have played on the program over the years. Phthalocyanine was one of the first "IDM" type artists for me to play on the program (back when for some reason the KUCI music director put out the first 12" as "Phthaloc Yanine"). Most important here, however, is the amazing label Plug Research. I honestly cannot think of a record label that has opened my ears up to more new sounds over the years -- from the IDM side to the techno side -- they are just amazing. For Joe + Allen. the caretaker: friends past reunited selected memories from the haunted ballroom [v/vm] The Caretaker CD is such a gem -- very simple, but very effective. This is being played as a nice big fat thanks to v/vm and friends for their kindness to me and the show. While they have not been played on the show until fairly recently, I think their music (along with labels like Lucky Kitchen) fits all too well within the context of the show over the years. For James + AJ. marc almond: lonely go go dancer tragedy (bonus cd to open all night) [blue star/xiii bis] I am not sure if it is a good thing, but Soft Cell is to me what Kraftwerk seems to be to most folks I know in the electronic music community. It is the electronic band I grew up on, was most impressed with, and sang along loudest to. Silly, yes, but then again, so is the band. Even sillier is the fact that I saw Marc Almond twice when he came to LA -- and it was a fabulous show. This song I think is perfect, though I cannot quite put my finger on why. For Rich. bassland: shallow grave, clock stopping creeps [unreleased] I have seen Bassland perform live countless times. Everytime Stu and Alex play they take my mind to new places -- the music is always something different, something fresh. I could fill up a whole show with sounds they have created over the years. For the final show, however, I am playing one of the more moving trance pieces ever recorded (Shallow Grave) as well as a loop made from carvings on the run-out-groove of a record. Shallow Grave was written by Alex shortly after he saw the movie of the same name (which happens to be one of my favorite films.. the song captures the mood of the film so nicely). The loop was created by Stu and has somehow ended up in my hands... it is such the perfect moment of sound just to sit back and drift off on.. minimal techno finely crafted. If I ever have a wedding (or a funeral?) these would be the folk I would be honored to have play. For all the Green Eggs kids! current 93: the fall of christopher robin island [durtro] I debated playing this one. Back in the early days of the Lunchpail programs, when I was starting off with Amphetamine Lunchpail, this Current 93 piece was my theme song. I first heard it on the All Night Truck Driver's show that Don Bolles hosted (on a local station at the time called Mars). This really was my "gateway song" into other things like Coil, Pink Dots and Nurse With Wound. I am not sure how I would feel about this particular song if I heard it for the first time now, but the album it comes from, "Island", is beautiful! Current 93 are still putting out amazing material.. check out the new release: "I Have a Special Plan for the world." coil: i dont want to be the one astral disaster [threshold house] What on earth do I say about Coil? John and Peter have taken my ears happily through a goth period, a noise period, and then nicely into an e-influenced techno period (The Snow remains one of my favorite songs) and back full circle. "I Don't Want to be the One" has such a sick edge and pulls together the many sounds that Coil has explored. As a bonus, coil now shares a member with the glorious band Spiritualized (who have sent my mind elsewhere via live performance 2 times now). For Alex + Anji + all the goth kids still about. echo and the bunnymen: what are you going to do with your life? what are you going to do with your life? [london] I am an echo fanboy. I admit it. I love them. When I am in a bad mood I put on Heaven Up Here or Porcupine. I started to lose faith in them when they went through the Reverberation/Evergreen period - but this new album is filled with delightful pop. Plus I have no fucking clue what I am going to do with my life, so I guess it fits. I easily could have played some Glide as well.. For Lisa + Cindy. lustmord vs. metal beast: transmission fades [side effects] At some point while I was hosting the program, the Plug Research folk pointed me in the direction of Isoplux, a fine label run by Shad T. Scott. Shad, as Metal Beast, later came to KUCI with Lustmord to perform. The performance was released later on Side Effects -- one of the greatest compliments (though most likely unintentional) I have received while working at KUCI. "Transmission Fades" is the perfect end. Bonus section for all those who were patient enough to keep reading... Recent discoveries that have blown me away: john wiese, saturo wono, amps for christ, arovane, freeform, ear drum, sack + blumm, l'usine, sutekh, zammuto (oh, and herbert, ultra red, pole, low res, matmos and so many more bands most likely should have found a place in the show). lables that currently make it very hard to quit the show: mad monkey, mego/falsch & related, touch/ash international & related, threshold house/eskaton & related, schematic, krakfive, plug research, tom, suction, helicopter, vinyl communications, tigerbeat6, ground fault, v/vm, lucky kitchen, leaf, carpark, quartermass, sub rosa, sonig, max ernst, soleilmoon/staalplaat, ~scape, a-musik, beta bodega, apartement b, din, city centre offices, orthlorng musork, cytrax & related, ambush, united daries, durtro, comatonse, isophlux, polyrhythmic, mille plateaux, seasons (was earthtones) and so many more... Thanks for the support. It has been fun -- and a very hard decision to end the show!
