Detroit Techno. If you are looking for the skinny on the origins of IDM and Techno this is the book to read. It is incredibly well researched and quite insightful. Dan Sicko(pronounced SEE-koh) has been writing about electronic music in Detroit since the late 1980's. He has put this knowledge to work and created a book that in many Detroit artists' minds in the single best tome on 313 Techno ever written. He weaves 20 years worth of interviews, press clippings, and releases together into a cohesive, elegant narrative. The book itself reads very quickly, and is never tedious. While Techno Rebels is entertaining to read, it is packed with information and insight. While other dance music "historians" write books that get distracted with musing about drug use, annoying pseudo intellectual/arty new speak vocab, or a rock journalists slanted perspective, Dan Sicko hits you with nothing but a straight forward, information dense, history on Detroit Techno. If you want to learn about the history on one of the most influential electronic music scenes ever, you need a copy of Techno Rebels. Dan concentrates on early Detroit and Techno until 1993. Sicko elucidates the very early origins of Techno in the late 70's and early 80's, Italio-disco, Shari-vari, Deep Space, Cass Tech...from there the mid-80's with Metroplex, Transmat, KMS...to the late 80's Neil Rushton, Final Cut, Interfisch records, 10 city...onto UR, Octave One, +8. Sheffield Bleep...all the while the relationships and circumstances are being clearly explained and described. I cannot recommend this book enough. You really owe it to yourself to pick up a copy and learn about this music. It is well written, it presents an accurate history, and while being entertaining, Techno Rebels will teach you a great deal about Detroit and the early origins of UK IDM. any info on the net ? http://www.techno-rebels.com/index.html
