Everytime you play vinyl, you are only exercising a degree of decay on the internal grooves. This is not entirely a negative thing, you are actually 'maturing' the sound as I see it. Provided you have an excellent stylus you can really get a deep sound out of the grooves. Personally I prefer this well rounded sound of 'matured' vinyl rather than the sharp/ cold sound of fresh vinyl. And on the issue of collectibility, you can't beat those coloured, etched vinyl and picture discs! I think as Jeff stated (apart from the economic factor), the other reason is that tracks sound much more robust when pressed on one sided vinyl, especialy if they are 45rpm 12". I think there was a recent 313 discussion on whether artists were ripping off consumers with one-sided 12"s, or Eps/ Lps with only a few tracks.

Depends on what you are into of course! For example, Planet E, Peacefrog, Worm Interface and Warp records fetch much higher prices because the vinyl is rarer.
