While we're talking about IDM storefronts,
this weekend I travelled around New York City
going to various places. Quick blurbs:
Other Music:
For the most obscure stuff in every genre, they have it.
For techno purists a near miss, but for those into Mego
or Raster or Mille or their equally strange cousins in
rock and hip-hop, the place to go.
Kim's (the St. Mark's location):
Well, I found an old Repeat, an old Stasis, some nice
Playhouse and Klang, the Herbert album, etc. Especially
for CD's for the IDM crowd (those more tolerant of the new
sound than me) they beat Other Music hands down. They even
have the porn on the same floor as the vinyl.
Sonic Groove:
Temple:
For me the best place in the city, no contest. Clerk was awesome, layout
was awesome (only store where it was remotely easy to
browse through things), design of the store was awesome,
listening set-up was awesome, selection and organization
were awesome, pretty much straight techno, house and tech-house,
but that's mostly all I care about. Reacquainted myself with
how great UR's "Punisher" is.
Also have to say it was somewhat amazing to be able to listen
to music before I buy it. Wow.
As for on-line places, my experience is go Bent Crayon if you
can to keep things domestic shipping (USA), if he doesn't have it (somewhat
uncommon) go to Hardwax (they'll usually have it) or Rush Hour (who have
often even more obscure awesome classic 313-styled new stuff).
Hedonizm always seems to get one cool sounding thing every week
and while I have some objections, Mark is a very
friendly guy and if I can I support him as well.
As for out of print stuff the best thing you can do is just keep
your eyes open and when something appears, you grab it. It
seems optimistic to assume there is always a copy of Techno Playtime
or the Philosophy of Sound and Machine available but on the
occasions they become available: grab 'em!
