It's on the 'Colors' soundtrack, which is in print according to cdnow. There's a version with Rakim's rap removed called 'Not Paid Enough' on Coldcut's 'What's That Noise?' which I'm pretty sure is out of print.

All the good sampler starting points are out of print, unfortunately. Look for 'RetroTechno/DetroitDefinitive' on Network and for 'Relics' on Transmat/Buzz just in case, though. I haven't heard it but people generally recommend the 'True People' comp on React as well. Planet E's 'Intergalactic Beats' is one of the best techno compilations ever (better than 'Artificial Intelligence' IMO) but it's got tracks by the Black Dog, Kirk DeGiorgio, Stefan Robbers etc in addition to Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin etc. Another very good Detroit-inflected comp is 'The Deepest Shade of Techno' on SSR. Carl Craig's got some solid singles collections out: 'Elements,' credited to Psyche/BFC, 'The Secret Tapes of Dr Eich' credited to Paperclip People, and 'The Sound of Music' credited to 6 9. The first two are on Planet E, the last is on R&S. Start with 'Elements.' For Atkins, check out Model 500: 'Classics' on R&S. For Saunderson, there's a double CD out that looks to be fairly complete but I don't really dig a lot of what I've heard from him, so I haven't picked it up. You should also look for the 'Depth Charge 1' comp on Submerge, and the Axis Records compilation 'The Other Day,' and absolutely pick up 'The Quest' by Drexciya (one of my votes for album of the year).

'Innovator' is brilliant and a must-have for everyone on this list. If I were starting a collection today, I'd buy these first, in order (excluding the two out-of-print ones which I'd buy on sight): 1. Derrick May: Innovator 2. Various: Intergalactic Beats 3. Drexciya: The Quest 4. Psyche/BFC: Elements C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org) "Sex is the darndest nougat murder, something something e-mail something something la la la la beable beable trousers and dingaling nougat..."
