A couple of months back, I received a promo copy of a compilation CD on a label I'd never heard of before called Vitamin with the boring but descriptive title "An Electronic Tribute to Pink Floyd". It was generally as mediocre as you might expect, although a couple of tracks were actually not that sucky ("The Theme From 'More'" was actually quite well done). I was sort of surprised, though, to see the names of some SoCal artists I was familiar with and have enjoyed in the past, like T.H.C., George Sarah and Bassland. I wondered a bit why they'd be slumming on a crappy Cleopatra-esque tribute record, but hey, every needs to pay the rent. Well, yesterday, things got much worse as I received another Vitamin offering - "Getting Into The Grooves: A Tribute to Madonna". Lots of the same artists on this one (including the ones I mention above). But while the Pink Floyd one had a couple of worthwhile moments, this disc is undoubtedly one of the worst electronic records I've heard in a long, long time. Every limp and lifeless drum'n'bass, trance, acid techho and "funky breaks" cliche in the book is trotted out while a bunch of unknown vocalists do their best Maddy impersonations. Badly. It's almost funny at first, but by the end, it's just sad. And I see on the website for their distributor, Navarre, that the same group of artists have also released a Nine Inch Nails tribute. Shudder. Like I said above, I know that these guys are capable of doing good stuff when they want to. I guess they must be making a good chunk of change on these things. At least I *hope* they are, for their sake. I'm embarassed for them if they're not.
