Much of the work of so-called "serious music" composers in the last few
decades goes through all sorts of contortions to -avoid- a discernible
pulse. They are trying to take music to what they consider the next
level, and a constant rhythm would be considered primeval rather than
transcendental. Thus, Stockhausen's comments.
