Process' new CD/LP on FatCat, _Shape Space_,
is, to these ears, the finest example of minimal dubby techno...
maybe ever. Well, it is at least the equal to the best of Chain
Reaction's roster and Porter Ricks. Some cuts have been
previously released on vinyl, but hearing all 10 tracks gathered here
consecutively really brings into focus how amazing a
producer Steve Barnes (a Brit who now lives in Cologne)
is. The album's sublimely swelling synths and gently propulsive rhythms,
along with
its subtly deployed clicks, pops, hums and hiss, will earn _Shape Space_
a sure position on my year-end best-of list.
Oh, btw, the new Funkstörung album on !K7, _Appetite For
Discstruction_, is very good, too. There are lots of vocals and
rapping, but it's relatively well done. But you don't really want
to know about that.
