As long as we're talking Miles Davis: To anyone who doesn't already have _Bitches Brew_, _Pangaea_, and _Agharta_, I'd suggest you try those 3 (in about that order) before moving on to other titles in Davis' "fusion" period. _Tribute to Jack Johnson_ is often overlooked, and also an extraordinary piece of work -- might be a good start since it's a single, studio disc (better sound than the live _Pangaea_ and _Agharta_, and less expensive). But _Bitches Brew_ is essential. Having said that, _Live-Evil_ and _Dark Magus_ are ace as well. _In a Silent Way_ (from just before the seminal _Bitches Brew_) is compelling "ambient" that's well worth checking into. (Your local library may have some of these, btw...) _Black Beauty_ and _At the Fillmore_ are a notch down for me. I haven't heard many good things about _In Concert_ (c.'72). All-Music Guide just about says it's worthless (wanky, self-indulgent and not well-executed... basically a document of an off-night). Haven't heard it myself though. I'd like to see _Big Fun_ issued in the U.S. so I can avoid paying the price of the Japanese imports as I did for several others. --Mark Kolmar
