Just one question... When should you ever believe the hype? Is there anybody actually worthy of *all* the hype the media gives them? Granted, some are more worthy than others. But still -- listen and decide for yourself, rather than blindly believing what underpaid writers desperate for a scoop have to say. Regarding DJ Spooky. He has been overhyped. However, he can spin an amazing set. Maybe it isn't mixed *well*, but that isn't the point. Crap attitude? His writing sure is annoying (yet strangely amusing), but he was a really nice guy when I introduced myself, and he sure didn't know me from a hole in the ground. Can't select music? That's your own preference. I really like the way he mixes it up, you may not. Of course, depending on the mood he's in, the stuff he spins really varies (I saw an ambient set of his which bored the shit out of me). Anyway, Spooky is trying to make you think or something. He isn't trying to make his sets easy to take, and his taste in music doesn't hue to any preconceived theme. Thus, he's really the kind of person you have to judge for yourself. Go see him live some night he isn't spinning an ambient set, but be warned that he's hit-or-miss. And give a listen to his albums, although IMO they have nothing to do with his live feel. And yes, he may be an art-wank, but who really cares? Private pretention has nothing to do with the music coming out of the speakers. Just don't believe the hype... Sam
