coldcut - beats and pieces 2 x 12" (ninja tune) (btw the press release came with a biog of coldcut which details their history, if anyone is interested i can mail it to ya) [first the press release]- " fuck the dj's let play with toys the daddies of sonic sex pressed up 30 custom made platters of souped up beats & peices and distributed them amongst the most delinquent sound terrorists, to wreak havoc inter-pretation in their own styles, the beats and pieces series continues to explore the turf that lies between the turntable knights of the analouge age and the ticktocknology of digital manipulation cd single contains quicktime video for mac & pc the coldcut album ' let us play' will be released on september 8th, featuring collaborations with ex dead kennedy jello biafra, legendary funk drummer bernard purdie, rising stars jimpster, activist bongo, poet salena saliva and one of coldcut's biggest inspiration's steinski, the album will come complete with a free cd rom developed by 'hex', it features videos of 8 tracks, related info, games and iconclastic music creation toys" [now the review] back to the old skool folks, to say the sample masters have pooled some devasting scratch fiends to reshape their sampledelic 80's classic is an understatment indeed whole thang kicks off with a deconstructed mix from black and moore themselves, fluidly cutting up hip hop / funk soundbites with kentic scratching, imagine their journeys by dj's cd compressed into 6 minutes on the flip side new kid on the block kid koala creates a piledriving stop/start/flip on it's head mix of beats, the aural representation of rush hour new york, a 1000 taxi drivers yelling and tooting their horns, even led zep's 'when the levee breaks' makes a brief appearance. next up john mcentire (tortoise) takes the heat out of the proceedings with a slow burning dubby lounge-core take that brings to mind a wistful soft machine jamming with massive attack disc 2 steps further into pure sonic hip hop territory, strictly kid's mix defies logic with it's lightning fast tempo changes and wild abstract scratching whilst q-bert strips the track down to it's bare components before restructuring an oblique experimental hip hop groove t-power draws the curtain with dramatic oriental charged drum n bass express complete with street fighter samples sm@ 4thworld -- http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/4thworld/ check the 'r-chive' page - discourse from black dog/ musik aus strom/ irdial + more //::transmdision ovner::\\nmdomen discdonext....
