...when beat mixed or otherwise mixed on the wheels of steel or when sampled, the drum breaks are syncopated or shuffled by starting and stopping the break to funk things up. This evolution of what was originally a drum break has evolved to a ryhthm style that is frequently programmed rather than sampled. I beleive that breakbeat means a lot more today than just sampled beats. It's a particular shuffle of ryhthm.
