My definition is a that a "breakbeat" is a certain shuffling 4/4 funk rhythm that appears to originate in the first few drum-solo measures of James Brown's "Funky Drummer" (this has been sampled a lot). This beat is also in late 60s Booker T records and in Cymande's "The Message" (70?) Solenoid
