Well it might have been beer, not piss that he threw on the crowd last night, but it's the same fucking difference. My respect-o-meter just about hit empty last night. Why? I'll tell ya. Dropping a loop on a turntable and walking away, returning 40 minutes later to change the loop and then going back upstairs and eat some dinner. Not cool. Mixing a little ambient noodling (on tape) into the same loop then going up into the lighting booth for another 30 minutes to fuck with the lights, when there's a guy up there who's job is to 'fuck with the lights'. Not cool. Not doing a sound check then bitching about the sound all night long. Not cool. Letting a record run out, cranking the gain for a minute (bump, sizzle, bump, sizzle...) and then just dropping the needle some japanese noise. Not very special. Throwing beer on the crowd. Not very original. and so on and so on... ------------------ When Alec finally got to doing a little mixing, it was mildly interesting. He busted out a lot of DHR type stuff, plus tons of noise, screams and other shit cut in. This part of his set lasted for only a small fraction of the show and got pretty old quick, since no one was dancing. Why, you might ask, was there no dancing? Because it was the biggest trainspotter convention I've ever seen! Just about ever socal IDM listmember was there, including the inimitable 'Fresh'. Plus every wacked out, experimental DJ for miles. And most of them looked a little upset! ------------------ On with the review: Alec finished his set by dragging the needle across one record while doing spastic backspins on the other deck, then ripping one record off and dropping the styli on the slipmat/platter and making a hell of a racket. He then stormed off the stage, knocking shit about and throwing crap at the audence. Pretty cool, huh? Then some really wierd German guy started yelling into a mic and making some of the worst noise I've ever heard. Kind of sounded like rotterdam with a kerioki singer on top + disney samples and other cheesewiz. I borrowed money from everyone I knew there, ran into the bar and started drinking heavly. That made it all a bit better. word to the mothership, brock. ps. The best part of the night was a local band that opened called (I think) 'red alert'. They did a fair amount of auditory masterbation, but towards the end of their set, caught a groove and played some really nice 'autechre' type stuff. Someone told me that they were slated to release some stuff on LA based Plug Research soon.
