Ach!!! Nate, I think you're right about U2 making cheese-pop throw- away music. But, Bono being SMART? No way. Read the excerpts from interviews; hell, read the excerpts from a yet-unpublished interview which recently graced this list. Bono isn't smart, he's arrogant and has enough money to pay smart people to think for him. He thinks he's been ahead of the crowd when he is _lost_ in the fucking crowd. In retrospect, I wonder even how much of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" can be attributed to his genius. Yes, he knows the problem; but, his stirring up of Irish nationalism in the 80's was... formulaic. I mean, you don't hear Bono singing about that now when people aren't as black and white on "the troubles". (And don't flame me about him waving the flag. I'm no UDF supporter, to be sure!) My opinion -- and feel free to tell me why I'm wrong -- is that Bono got lucky early and has paid people to keep him looking good since then. Yeah, his people sometimes do good work for him. But overall? He just doesn't have anything amazing to contribute. Dale
