oooooooops sent this message before its time. I'll try to get it right this time. Someone wrote that we'd all bought the new Autechre, so there's nothing left to post about except the RDJ sex quiz. I disagree. First off, if this list has become so homogenised that we all agree that Ae's great, then there really is nothing to discuss. But that can't possibly be the case, can it? Secondly, I know there are many on this list who, by dint of limited financial means, wish to make an informed choice on most of their music purchases and so are waiting, perhaps impatiently, for any reviews they can get their hands on. Having only recently cottoned-on to Autechre, and being eager to expand my collection, I have bought, in the last month, Tri Repetae+Garbage+Anvil Vapre (Wax Trax), Envane (Warp) and, last night, Chiastic Slide (Warp). So much music in such a short interval tends to blend together, but I have to say that Envane is the stylistic standout. This release features more driving rhythms and cohesive (conventional) melodies. In short, it's catchy! In terms of quality, and I know this makes me sound like a starry-eyed groupie, they are all amazing. Chiastic features more static than any of the above mentioned releases. Sometimes in ripping bursts, and sometimes (these are my faves) in sweeping, pulsing, embracing waves. My 7 week-old baby grooves on this white noise stuff. (Can you imagine hearing Ae or other electronica at 7 weeks, as your first exposure to music? Can you imagine hearing everything with brand new ears? I think most of us came to IDM through a rather more circuitous path.) Sometimes the static permeates the whole song. Sometimes it cuts out completely, to let the listener really hear some clean, sweet pads. Many tracks begin with me wondering if I'll be able to handle 7 min. (or whatever) of this harsh noise, but once my ears adjust and some of the softer bits begin to filter through, I can't believe I ever had any reservations. Then, I play it again, and the experience repeats. This music makes me ask why I like it. That's cool. enjoy . . . . . peace, Matt
