It's this kind of condescending bullshit that causes most of the females on the list to lurk rather than post. Guess what? We don't need the male members of the species to turn us on to "intense, convoluted" things. We are all quite capable of discovering music on our own. In fact, I would say that I have managed to convert quite a large number of males to this music that, according to some, is so convoluted that I can't quite understand it. I'm just as big of a sad trainspotter as the rest of you and if the girls that you choose to covort with are incapable of understanding idm then perhaps you should reevaluate your choice of friends instead of making sweeping generalizations about the rest of us. I believe we already had this argument when someone on the list made the comment that "girlfriends just don't understand." This music is not made for men only and the females that you see at shows and flipping through the record bins are not only there because their boyfriend dragged them there. It is also completely erroneous to assume that all we like is the "gentle" stuff like SAW 2 and, as is implied below, that we only like it because some guy turned us on to it. This really needs to end immediately. It's not just people on this list either. I can't tell you how many times a person has come into my apartment and said, "Wow! Your boyfriend sure has a lot of records/cds." Perhaps what we should be examining is what exactly makes men think that females are incapable of having their own tastes and interests? More men than women listen to idm for the same reason more men than women like to stick their heads under the hoods of their cars when something goes wrong. There's an intense, convoluted process going on in each and men are culturally (or otherwise) predisposed to desiring an understanding of that process (or at least pretending they do). Still, I've turned a couple ex-girlfriends of mine on to Aphex, Autechre and such...and I do not exaggerate when I say that almost *every* girl I've ever played one of Aphex's "Selected Ambient Works" discs for has loved it. .------------------------------------------------------------------------. | nm: nickworthington | ml: nworth1@umbc.edu | "Gott wuerfelt nicht!" ae | |------------------------------------------------------------------------| | http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~nworth1 | [.sig_gn] @ 17:00:00 EST on 12.21.96 | `------------------------------------------------------------------------'
