First off, I just wanted to thank all the people who replied to my question about finding IDM CDs. I got something like eight response in email and they were all really helpful. Thanks. Now.. about the way some people are dissing Orbital because they have a video and whatnot.. That just doesn't make any sense to me. I see the exact same thing happening in other genres too. Punk is a good example. Most of my friends, unfortunately, are into that. There's a band called Shelter that just about everyone loved a couple years ago. Then this year they went on tour with No Doubt and the very same people who were raving about how great they were a year ago are talking about how they're sellouts and their music sucks, etc etc. They're playing the exact same music they were playing back before they got big (if you consider opening for No Doubt to be "big"). I don't get it. It's as if because they became popular, even their prior work is somehow tainted. Some people seem to be having the same reaction to Orbital's increasing mainstream appeal. Not to the extent of what I described above.. but pretty similar. So, In Sides got a pretty strong marketing push.. so what? It's an amazing CD. It's something that a lot of people SHOULD hear. As for it being designed for MTV; I also disagree with that. It's not even Orbital's most accessible album, in my opinion. The Brown album is far easier to get into on a first listen. I just can't see someone at a frat party deciding to pop in In Sides and play "The Girl With The Sun In Her Head" or "Out There Somewhere?" on the stereo. This might be better for the ambient list, but I'll give it a shot here. I was listening to the "a huge ever growing pulsating brain.." remix on Live 93 today. Right around 12:34-12:47 I'd swear I can hear a Fripp/Eno sample (or recreation) from one of the first few songs on The Essential Fripp&Eno. Someone has my copy of that so I can't check. Oh well. xdx
