MADONNA has won the bidding war to sign up British techno stars THE
PRODIGY to her label MAVERICK. The band, who have had two number one
records in their home country this year, have become the most
sought-after act in America since their single FIRESTARTER has begun
appearing on MTV. Their current independent label MUTE, who also handle
DEPECHE MODE, spoke to more than 20 labels keen to sign up the group
"who are going to do for techno what NIRVANA did for rock" according to
one record company president. Mute general manager MARK FOTIADIS says,
"Of all the executives we sat down with, Madonna knew more about the
genre and the different techno styles than anyone. Whether it's true or
not, she said she listens to the Prodigy when she works out." The band,
keen for the major label clout that Madonna could offer them, are
looking for a five year contract worth several million dollars. That
should be enough to allow the already rather perforated frontman KEITH
FLINT to afford to pierce every single part of his body. How lovely for
him.
