I got this because T Power has a couple of mixes on it, and the first track "Mutant Jazz" (T.Power vs. MK Ultra) doesn't disappoint. Melodically similar to a mello muziq track, with lots of chewy breaks. Only fly in the ointment is a prominently placed shakahuchi sample. What the fuck? You're groovin along and all of a sudden it's like there's a 'Salon Selectives' shampoo commercial in the middle of the song. The rest of the tracks are mostly decent, Emerald Cricket's "Ruby Red" is a standout. But the style in general is weirdly anachronistic -- the ragga vocal samples and 'Funky Drummer' breaks were passe in London 4 years ago. It happens that I kind of like that stuff when it's done well, but this disk would have them laughing themself silly in the UK. The CD strikes me as a kind of awkward effort. Really nice in some respects, but with a few dorky spots you have to look past. And it must be said -- Soul Slinger must be a tremendous putz to claim to have brought Jungle to the US single handedly. I'm not down with the blow by blow history, but I sincerely doubt any one person can claim sole credit for that. And here's another hot tip for Carlos -- don't put a diva crooning "Jungle...OOOOHH YEAH" in a track unless you're making a comedy record. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Some stuff is obviously a lot more popular than other stuff" -- Tom Butcher Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)
