Thought I'd post a review of this gig, in case anyone's interested :O) Norwich Waterfront, 8-1, # 7.50, November 28 1996 Uppers * Aphex Twin: a stormer of a gig, and funny too. When he started, I spent three minutes looking for him on stage, before spotting him lying down, behind the DJ kit, in classic 'teenage schoolgirl on sitcom' pose- lying on his front, kicking his heels. I spent the gig deciding whether to risk dancing to his hard, fast set (highlights: Laughable Butane Bob [extended], Girl/Boy, 'the Pirelli tune' [Joyrex J5?], Didgeridoo) and watch him from the side of the stage. The set was about 50 minutes in total, but I'm afraid I'm not enough of a spotter to give a comprehensive tracklist. * Teddies: There were also these hilarious flourescent human-size teddy bears with Aphex Twin masks moving around the audience. * Luke Vi(e)bert: (was this misspelt on the flyer then? Doh!) An interesting IDM/electro djing set, which didn't get a lot of people dancing but then, I enjoyed it. Downers * No merchandising: I wanted a t-shirt, dammit! * Teddies: some drunk-looking people seemed to be maltreating these comic icons. A bit sad really. * Weatherall: I'm probably in the minority here, but I didn't enjoy his 2-hour-ish set of Dave Clarke- style techno. On the other hand, a couple of people I left with thought he was excellent/ok and maybe I wasn't in the mood. One for the chemical underground, perhaps. * Rain: well, it was raining on the way back. * Sore throat: not really anyone else's fault either. I didn't see Broadcast, so no comment. On balance, worth it for the Twin alone, and probably I'd have been even happier at a gig with mu-ziq playing as well. Still, that's what you get for living in the sticks.
