MTV: ON THE FLIP SIDE
MTV is overhauling its playlist, giving more exposure to techno,
dance and "mainstream" performers while de-emphasizing
alternative rock, hip-hop and "hard-core" rap, the music channel
said Tuesday. MTV programming chief Andy Schuon told today's
(Wednesday) Los Angeles Times, "Our shift allows us, while we
wait for the next big thing, to widen our net to be able to catch
more things as we look ahead to '97 as a time of exploration in
music." MTV Networks chairman Tom Freston, in a Wall Street
Journal interview, remarked that the move was made in response to
a period of flat record sales. "We want to do something to shake
things up," he said.
