No wonder they have to give this shit away. First off, you have to worry
about any magazine that has ALAN JACKSON on the cover. Probably the only
Jackson that can possibly suck more than Michael. I don't care if they
did publish my favorite Aphex records. Here are some choice excerpts
from an article entitled "House vs. Ambient vs... seeing life from three
sides now: where dance music stands today":
"English ambient wizards like the Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and
Autechre compose with both Giorgio Moroder's sexy undulations and Brain
Eno's abstractions in mind; the bi-rythmic songs that emerge feel like
bodies being sliced every which way, the material world dematerialized."
Ahhhh. Turn that one over a few times next time you hear 'Setting Sun.'
Another winner:
"The music of Ruby, State of Grace, Lush, Underworld and the re-formed
Massive Attack and New Order, for example, all employ sequencer sound
patterns and trippy melodies even though their songs aren't aimed at
club use."
Aren't aimed at club use, huh? Blue Monday and Confusion were
intricately crafted peices of musical artistry meant to expand the
boundries of the most jaded connoiseur of experimental electronic music
('boom-boom-boom-boom'). That's why there are 10 different Born Slippy
remixes (how many ways can we hear 'Lager, lager, lager lager..."?).
re-formed? How he manages to group those bands together in any single
statement (let alone be so absolutely wrong) regarding music is beyond
me.
Shit like this does more harm than good. Stick to Alan Jackson lads...
