As the Germans say (or rather as a Dutch guy trying to speak German would say): 'In die Beschraenkung zeigt sich der Meister' It is *very* difficult to make a good minimal track, since there is so little variation, so you have balance those variations very precisely to make a good track. Autechre are capable of this most of the time, take for instance 'Gnit' or 'Overand' from Tri Repetae. I forgot which of the two it is, but it's the one with the sorta deep organ soundthingy. At about two-thirds of the track it drops out and a minute later it comes back. So simple, but so effective. For a totally different take on minimal, check out Robert Hood - 'Rek' (from the Internal Empire-2x12"). Basically one loop, but it works!

I'm gonna be a little heretical here, but I still think 'Amber' is Ae's best, it's so crystal-clear sharp, frail, eerie at times, but always beautiful. Think 'Bytes' and you're nearly there.

Dark and brooding? *cue Helen about Locust* :) Otto
