I picked up this 2cd set yesterday (in case you didn't read the subject, it's called "Berlin Unwrapped- The Love Parade.")... I'm only up to track 5, but so far I'm digging it. This is another special set put together by the makers of the Volume series, but this time, they decided to break tradition, and use the shittiest packaging I think I've ever seen... It's one of those 3-fold cardboard jobs, where two sides hold the discs, and the third holds the book. It's the exact same packaging used on Return To The Source. Unfortunately, the discs I bought yesterday have already been exchanged, because the damn manufacturing process glued the 2nd disc to the cardboard, _and_ put a nasty scratch through it. The glue problem was also present in the exchanged package, but I managed to get a disc without a scratch. Hooray ! Packaging aside, I was pleased to see a 7-minute Quicktime movie included on the 2nd disc, chronicling images and sound from the parade... However, the second half of the video (7 minutes total, so about 3 minutes) focusses on the Criminal Justice Bill, that great piece of legislation from the Britts... not! Video runs smooth on my P-133 32mb at work... waiting to see how well it does on a 486/100 at home this evening. Ok... /geek mode off. All in all, I'm glad Volume has put something out to supplement my last purchase from them, Textures. All new/exclusive stuff this time, including tracks by Ford Prefect, Thomas Fehlmann, Josh Wink, Paul Van Dyk, Sun Electric, Deep Space Network, and lots of other people I've never heard of... 21 tracks in all. I'm listening to the Fehlmann track right now, and I'm quite pleased with it in particular... no 4-on the floor nonsense here... This feels like the sort of rhythmic pattern Autechre might come up with, but the track is filled with lots of ear candy... very nice organ touches in the background here in the middle, floaty/spacey sounds throughout, some tweaks and squiggles off in the distance, and a tribal-flavored rhythm through the beginning and ending parts of the track. Very nice. Anyways, just thought I'd give some initial impressions to this new release from the Volume folks... If you're into the TEEX/Trance Atlantic series, you should pick this up. And if not, snag it anyway for the cool video. :-) -- guyjr@cc.gatech.edu | I.D.M.- That stage in sleeping when your feet are a.k.a., Guy Elden Jr. | moving faster than your eyes.
