When I returned from a really short trip to LA, and heard some CDs in Beat Non-Stop, I called Record Time and asked some guy in the "dance room" about some of this stuff. I got a rude kind of "we don't have it, and it's not probably not worth looking for anyway" kind of answer. I have bought some stuff in there, but I haven't really fallen in love with Detroit style techno... it's too bleepy and minimal for my taste. Goa seems to have more layers with lines changing priorities and it stays interesting. I have been into electronic music since I bought Switched-On Bach, The Wozard of Iz, and a pantload of vinyls in the late 60's. I bought a 2600 in 1973 and when I discovered drugs, I began to relate to all EM in terms of how much I'd like it if I were really buzzed. I don't get buzzed on the heavy stuff anymore, but a good tune can mess with my head in the good way. Obviously, the problem we all have is not getting burned. When vinyls were $3.99 it was no big deal to pick a handful, and if one sucked, it wasn't a major deal. "You can't judge by the cover" is very true. Radio stations don't play techno much here, so I fly blind, or go by word of mouth. The IDM is a big help, but I still plop down $18+ for some real sucky shit, and I'm tired of that. I know the vibe will end sometime, but for now, Goa trance is a music label that has all the attributes I like in EM: no vocals (samples are okay), multi-layered sound, snappy and interesting music lines.

The term is only that. I have heard and bought a lot of "trance" and often it has turned out to be quite ambient like, or too "Detroity" or ultimately just not "doing it" for me. The addition of the word "goa" does act as a signal that my chances of finding a majority of songs I'll like is higher than I might otherwise expect. --Henry B.
