How could a near-genius idea go so wrong?
MTV is an out-of-control nuclear experiment.
It's mutated into something monstrous and frightening, vacuous and ugly.
Only the brilliantly morphaceous subcutaneously surreal self-ads offer a
glimpse into MTV's wasted potential.
The music played on MTV is just absolutely beyond worthless.
The accompanying videos are generally dull and predictable babefests and
mastur-class ego props.
You might find one intelligent video every two hours.
If you have the patience to hang around that long.
All the latest and "greatest" grunge and rap.
You can't even find a banghra cut, much less Children of the Banghra.
Does it ever torture you that the same amount of raw materials are required
to produce a true work of art as are needed for the latest parent-raping
bullet-ejaculating hate-spewing talent-deficient beatnoize and/or whiny
self-indulgent self-loathing self-deprecating hygienically-challenged
guitar-licking anti-heros?
Well, it does me. All those ones and zeros spending their lives - for
nothing. The waste. The horror. The humanity.
Someone should break into the MTV studio, hold out for a few hours, armed
to the teeth and loaded with military rations, spinning underground beats
and ambi-bop trips. Toss on some Miles for good measure. Run some fractal
generator program through the video lines. Like that Mandelacid thing on
hyperreal. The youth of America would never be the same.
VH1 offered a promising start, as true alternative music. But now it's not
much better. Except for all the fashion runway shows - ooh la la, and you
might actually hear some good music accompanying those long legs on the
catwalks.
Somebody _please_ begin an ITV channel before it's too late.
Open with a bang, or rather a squelchy thud, by playing FSOL videos
non-stop for 24 hours.
Get lawyers ready for the impending psychological trauma lawsuits from
suburban nowheres of the world...
Dreaming.
