Hi!
It's been another of those happy days again, I actually got all the records I
went shopping to get! Here's what I think of them..
Photek - T'Rainon (EP, OP-ART)
He goes for a *very* deep sound - the whole set has a 'curtains drawn' feel to
it, very minimal, and he's resisted the temptation to slap a cheap vocal on the
top. Very pleasant surprise on side B when the drum machine comes in (of
course, it won't be for you now will it? :*)
Tom Jenkinson - Bubble And Squeak (EP, Worm Interface)
Very competent, but side A owes a little to Plug... What am I saying?? This
is a total rip off of Plug!! This track may as well be called 'Military Jazz
Pt.2', no-one would bat an eyelid. On side B, the rhythmic muscles are flexed
a little more, with a more original sound. A great buy, but it pales compared
to what is to come..
Squarepusher - Plays.... (EP, Rephlex)
Tom's stepped up a gear for this one, and his bass guitar gets a real airing
throughout. Lots of new breaks and very well put together. Some of what
Rephlex had to say starts to make sense now, this is really out there..
Squarepusher - Port Rhombus (EP, Warp)
And it just gets better.. The drums take the lead in this EP, and there are
some stunning breaks and FX. And this is on the first listen! It can only
improve with time. Possibly the best of the three Jenkinson EPs here. Even
Plug doesn't sound so special after hearing these.
Cheers,
SjaY.
