For those who are interested in the European folk mythology, black dog has been always considered a messenger of devil or an omen of devil's being around. Don't know about black dog's meaning in other cultures' mythologies though. Maybe those who are into the Egyptian mythology could tell more, knowing BDP's interest in that.
