Check out Grammaphone, near Clark & Diversey. A modest, ever-changing
selection. They get the new releases quickly, but they also go fast.
Sometimes I can't tell what they don't get, and what just sells so fast I
never see it. Grammaphone's focus is still on DJ-oriented 12" records. I
get my 313 there, and you can generally find the stuff that's discussed
most on this list.
Reckless on Broadway at Belmont has some IDM, but they focus on indie
rock, with some experimental and a lot of hip, used CDs and LPs.
Tower in northwest suburban Schaumburg carries more import IDM than the
Chicago location (Clark near Fullerton). Tower also has locations in west
suburban Bloomingdale and downtown. One thing about Tower is occasionally
something pops up long after you thought it was gone.
I have to get a lot of stuff mail-order.
You can do fine with public transportation except in the suburbs. You can
travel to the suburbs most times of day, but you will need a car once you
are there. (Metra is designed mainly for commuters to drive to the
station and take a train into the city.)
