Ok, so I decided to check out what this Squarepusher hype was all about.
Didn't feel like buying the DJ Food remix yet, and I found a Conumber ep, so
I bought it... All I had heard was how it was just splattering peoples heads
against walls--and that doesn't tell me Jack about the music. Well, after
listening to the EP a few times, both at 33 and at 45 (since it doesn't
specify) this is what I came up with. The guy can lay down a complex drum
pattern. At 33, it's pretty fast. At 45, it's blisteringly fast. I mean
FAST. But that doesn't make it totally enjoyable for me. There was a lot of
this hyperspeed percussion on RDJ's HAB 1 ep, and to me that was just ok, not
brilliant (although that one doesn't sound good on both speeds). I mean, all
that is is just turning up the tempo knob on the machine, and sometimes it
can sound silly if you ask me. I liked Conumber the best of all the tracks,
but I don't have it on the 1200 right now, if you catch my drift. I haven't
given up on the guy altogether, but I'm not going to be bustin' my chops (and
my wallet) to get his every release. Sorry not to corroborate all this hype
I have been hearing--but Conumber just didn't splatter my head against a
wall, ya know?
