It shouldn't but that wasn't my actual point. Read on if you have time to kill...

Well, I was merely commenting on the fact that the stores I often purchase records from seem to have an inordinate number of promos lining thir shelves at times. I remember when the Black Dog's "Spanners" was first released, and one of the stores sold promos alongside the regular cd's for the same price (since they were identical, other than the stamp that says "promotonal only: sale prohibited"). I think they had about seven or eight promos and only two normal copies, in fact. Another store had some twelve (yes, twelve, I counted) Goldie promos that they sold as used (which constituted their entire stock of the album). I know that selling promo copies of anything is supposed to be "prohibited" (I don't know if that means "illegal" or not). Whether or not it is illegal, promos are usually given to some outfit, like a reviewer or a record store, for free, and so selling them means 100% profit in all cases. It just doesn't seem fair to me then when promo prices go to $22 or more, because whoever got that promo in the first place got it for free, and then may have sold it to the person who priced it at $22, but in any case, someone is really ripping off a record label when they sell a promo. That's why I really can't see record stores selling them in large quantities as being very ethical at all. As for "rare" promos, that are real different from the other release, or collectors items or something... I don't know. I guess, do what you want; I don't want to raise another "bootleg" issue here. But if record stores stock their shelves with promos, that's just shit, and that was my origional point in my first post on the subject.
