look for old records/repressed cds that contain recordings made by someone droppping a mic in the middle of a tribe and hitting record. you cant go wrong :) i always find this stuff used in world sections of local cd shops. sometimes the wire runs articles on this sort of stuff too, which i find nice, though i still have yet to hunt down anything that has been written up in that magazine -- but i find it groovy that they cover the music/field recordings. possible labels: folkways, jvc world of sound im sure someone could give you more. afrika is a pretty cool track. i recently pulled it to play in a set with a bunch of muslimgauze, t singh (the one song i like :), field recordings, aphex (that fun new almost tribalish track on the _or_ comp) .. and stuff like that. the african/mid east percussion sound really has kept my attention. good stuff. chris.
