I think I picked the wrong words when I said "fun" and "goofy."
Let me try again... I was thinking of the definite sense of
humor that comes across in a track like "Bim Bom", and the
outright oddness of a lot of his material. You're right on
his trancier tracks: they tend to be dark as hell, but in an
entirely different way than, say, BC. "Voyage to Lemuria", for
instance, has a driving, off-kilter rumble going along with those
eerie, squeaking, howling noises. Anyway, I'm looking forward
to hearing "The Invasion" EP.
PS: I'm still kinda surprised that no one has mentioned the
P-Funk guest appearance on Red Planet 6 yet...
