Hello, Thought this might be of interest based on the IDM-mixing thread a while back. That thread helped me a great deal, belated thanks for all the djs that spoke up. Here's my latest mix, the first done using my new computer for harddrive recording/CDR burning. Nice 'mix' (smile) of beatmatched and non-beatmatched musical terrain. Beatmatches are indicated with a + at the end of the line. Silences (breathing space) are indicated by a blank line. solar x: dasha 1,2,3,4..... mouse on mars: mykologics + rhythm & sound w/ tikiman: never tell you chessie: 3rd trick tied + tickled trio: mutant + dr. octagon: earth people mouse on mars: albion rose peter murphy: rollcall - recall + isan: salamander + bochum welt: greenwich + ian pooley: what's your number bjork: amphibian autechre: maphive 1.6 solar x: koroleva talkin shop: tied + tickled trio/dr. octagon The track from t+tt goes free in the middle but then gains momentum for a strong, finely understated jazz finish. This building momentum lent itself to launching into a more driving track. The incendiary drums from dr. octagon (from the andrea parker dj kicks, so there's some depeche mode remix sound in the loop too) is used to back it up (volume ~50%) for the last 8 bars or so. This was challenging because the t+tt is non-sequenced at this point, so the tempo moves around. I'd hit CUE on beat 1, hold it for almost 2 bars, then release it and hit CUE again to restart the 2 bar loop. While constantly dragging/nudging the tempo of the drum loop to match the subtle ebb and flow of the t+tt tempo (use the force!). peter murphy/isan This Peter Murphy remix (by the guys from KMFDM) works alot better when mixed than it does as a standalone track IMO. That said this is my favorite part of the mix. The transition is trivially simple: at the end of the Peter Murphy track, which is a hard cut off at the end of a measure, simply hit LOOP on the PM and PLAY on the Isan. The result is that both tracks start at the beginning perfectly synced. This works great volume-wise because the beginning of the PM is already mixed low on the source CD, so it provides a great electro backbeat for the Isan. Loop the first 2 measure of the PM (same as Dr. Octagon above). Work the mixers delay effect with rhythm to add a musical slapback effect to the PM beat. As the Isan builds steam fade PM out. isan/bochum welt Also easy but fun, and the music.. wow! Towards the end of the Isan it goes into a repetitive motif that is a kind of coda separate from the rest of the track (structurally). I sped the tempo up gradually at this point all the way to +10, which put it very close to the tempo of the Bochum Welt. When the Isan beat drops out and that one Isan synth note reverberates wonderfully keep count/tempo in your head. Count out 2 measures and start the Bochum Welt track. A beatless beatmatch. =D So do you guys have a favorite IDM transition or mix to share? One that you've done yourself or heard someone else do? I'd love to hear about them.. always interested in new techniques. Also, the above mix is available.. I make the CDRs myself for fun, not profit. If you want one, drop me a line. I'm still very new to DJing.. any other comments welcome.
