PETER NAMLOOK IS PHIL GRAMM in the NEW ACTION THRILLER "ELECTRO-POLITICAL-WANK-FEST!!!" Donkey Rhubarb's "Steel Drum" sounds? It's yer basic analog FM percussive sound. I didn't make the steel drum connection until after I'd listened to it for a while. Lots of analog FM on that disk, especially the 3 oscillator FM in the rhythm tracks -- those bubbling sounds. A friend of ours who is completely unfamiliar with electronic music was over last night and heard a little of DR and said it sounded like someone 'rubbing balloons together.' On the Icct Hedral front, being a former orchestral cellist I have two observations: 1. Classical players can't swing. Listen to the original and then the orchestrated version, and the violins at the beginning sound kind of stiff, like they're thinking "he wants me to play WHAT over and over?" 2. The symphony orchestra (the # and placement of players of different instruments) has evolved such that it's possible for a good orchestrator to achieve sonic transparency in a complicated arrangement. Each instrument has it's own timbral niche and they don't mush up with other instruments unless you want them to. 3. Glass did a good job on orchestration, if what you wanted to hear was the interplay between the different lines in Icct Hedral. The original is better for the inclusing of the MS20 percussion line. -- Bob Dole has been adopted by an Indian tribe.
