Looks like the message I sent Sunday flew away to the great bit bucket in
the sky, so let me try again...
I was originally replying about Elektroids... I had a chance to listen to
bits of the record this past weekend, and for my tastes, found it a bit too
minimalistic. Even though it was on the Warp label, where I usually find lots
of great releases, I decided to pass on it this go around.
Fortunately, however, I did not pass up a 4 track rekkid called
"Electro: The New Electro Sound of London."
Holy frijoles wow wow boogie woogie on down to the ground does this kick!
I'm listening to the first cut right now, and I could definitely find myself
cuttin some rug to this track! It's called The Beat, and sounds like
a very Electro take on the KLF's What Time is Love... no direct sampling that
I can tell, but they came damn close to matching the original melodic line and
beat.
The second track is called Bass Is Da' Place, and starts out tame enough...
a few percusive clappity claps goin, and some melody. Then, a pause, and
1...2...3BASS..4...1...2...3BASS..4... and on and on, with a "Bass is the
place" and "come on!" sample goin.. not much else happenin here, but it
does let me get back at the neighbors some :-)
The flip side's got 2 tracks, Westway and Music. Westway starts out by
telling us to "Get get get get busy, communicate with the world", and layin
out some funky grooves. Hihat-ish clicking, some more samplin, spittin,
whistlin, and other little trinkets of sound, and then the main melody
line kicks in... Definitely a trancier number, but one worthy of providing
a nice transition after some heavy workin out on the dance floor.
The final track starts out with a solo string-pad type solo, then something
reminiscent of Cubik (808 State), tho not near as hard. A good beat gets us
going, mixed in with a nice organ riff. I like the way things change in and
out, going from beat to solo organ riff. "Annihiliting Rhythm" kicks back in
the main beat line again, whilst we trip away down the funkimitasmic road to
bliss!
The artist names, in case someone may know who they are, are Newton, Thursday
Club, Westway, and Isis Rising (as best as I can decipher from the labelling).
I'm quite happy with this purchase... it's not quite as "hardcore" as the
Jedi Knights release and remix of Link (good grief! Is there such a thing yet
in the new Electro movement?), but to me it's a great change from the trancey
stuff I've been buying as of late.
