---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 21 Jun 1995 23:52:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Ned Raggett <eahg119@ea.oac.uci.edu> Subject: Aphex's Anime Guest Appearance If this has already been discussed, apologies, but I just saw this and had to share. Background--Japanese animators seem to love to sneak in crazed pop culture references in the strangest of places. In one of the original _Macross_ episodes [bastardized in the US as part of the _Robotech_ series], a missile zooming past the screen displayed on one frame the Budweiser logo, for instance. Anyway, I ended up with a review copy of the first episode of _Macross Plus_, which is really good, as far as my somewhat sporadic knowledge of things anime goes--excellent animation at points, while coming across overall as a futuristic _Top Gun_ with an actual plot [strange but true...]. About halfway through, there's a sequence showing life in a future city on another, human-colonized planet--it looks like an extremely cool San Francisco, sort of the flipside of _Blade Runner_'s dark LA. The year is 2040 AD. At one point, the camera cuts to a streetside scene showing shoppers, pedestrians, buses, and various ads and posters. On one, you see this: AFX [the Aphex symbol appears, in a circle as on SAW 1] SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS VOLUME 23 2034-2040 Good to see Mr. James will still be busy in a few decades! Has anyone uncovered any similar plugs for ambient or IDM artists in anime works?
