so, the familiar strains of "egypt" segue neatly into throbbing bass tones and flutes that recall "pod room" from amorphous androgynous. but the beat that comes in is a funky acoustic drum loop. we're in "kai" country now and it's a nice place to be, indeed. strange synth pulses and distorted vocals float over the landscape. 4 minutes and 24 seconds later, it's over. the only unavailable-elsewhere track on the new ISDN. worth paying $15 for? hell yes! if it was only four SECONDS of new fsol music it would be easily worth twice the price. what could you possibly be thinking? anyway, kai leads into "amoeba". a crashing mo wax-style beat married with a strange vocal "ahh" loop. this one doesn't change much over its five minutes but it's wonderfully hypnotic and entrancing. "a study of six guitars" appears in the midst of all this new stuff, sounding as wonderful as it ever did. a minute of swirls and strange noises leads us into "snake hips" which kicks off with a funky drum loop and some bizarre wah wah guitar samples. jazzy stand up bass comes in and the thing becomes a fucked up tripped out headphunk number with big band brass stabs and heavily flanged string pickings. and that's it. if you're an FSOL diehard like me you can't afford to miss out. /jon
