I could be smoking crack again (yeah, I know it's a bad habit)
but I coulda sworn Nothing was a wholly owned subsidiary of
Interscope, which is in turn a subsidiary of Atlantic (which is in
turn a subsidiary of...). Trent might still be chained to TVT in one
way or another, but I think all of the Nothing stuff is distributed
and marketed by Interscope. And what a wonderful label it is, too.
And IRS owns none of Network, Nettwerk, or Apollo. As far as I
know they've distributed a few Nettwerk releases (primarily
Consolidated back in the day) but that's the limit of their
involvement with any of those three.
Deconstruction is a UK company, who occasionally get
distributed over here. As far as I know, they own themselves. And I
_thought_ that SOMA was a homegrown Bay Area label, but that's just
supposition because I don't have anything to back it up.
You also forgot about the whole Geffen / DGC / whatever
tangle. And who owns the Medicine label?
Isn't this kind of a pointless discussion? It's interesting,
because the majors do go to great lengths to hide the fact that their
"indie" arms are wholly-owned subsidiaries of a multinational (which
makes me ask just how cynical they are), but who cares about major
labels when you can get quality domestic tuneage from:
- Accelerate
- Axis
- Analog
- C&S / MicMac
- Centrifuge
- Comatonse
- Communique
- Dance Mania
- Djungle Fever USA
- Drop Bass Network
- Exist Dance
- Experimental
- M-Plant
- Nervous / Nervous Dog / Sorted
- Planet E
- Power Music / Sex Trax / Power Trax
- Sm:)e (owned by Priority)
- Strictly Rhythm / X-Sight Tracks
+ the Submerge family:
- 430 West
- Direct Beat
- Happy Soul
- Generator
- Matrix
- Metroplex
- Red Planet
- Shockwave
- Teknotika
- Underground Resistance
- Synewave NY
- Transmat
- Trax
- Ultraviolet
- Utensil
- Visible
- Warehouse
In my mind, the whole indie / major distinction is a pretty
odious and intangible one. Why make the distinction? Saying there are
"major" labels gives them more credit than they're worth. Major
marketing, maybe. All of the above are cranking out music that is just
as worthy as the majors', and most of them are doing it with a hell of
a lot more sincerity and a hell of a lot less attention to the bottom
line.
