Hello everyone at this great list!
My name is Pedro Tapajós and I have inhabited this space-time continuity for
29 years. I am (amongst many other descriptors) a dj here in Brasilia,
Brazil, for the last 13 years, and I would like to tell you people about a
very different "club" experience when contrasted with the rest of the world
(possibly).
You see, when I started playing, we didn't have anything like a 'scene'
here. Being a small town, albeit the capital of the country, didn't really
help information reaching here. After some travelling around and being
inspired by a place called Nation in São Paulo, I decided to start djing
some more interesting music on the dancefloor. The only other options in
town were indie-rock parties or yuck-discotheques playing crapola.
My first party was in 1987 and it was the first time the city was tasting
stranger music, namely deep underground house and acieeeeeed. All the kids
who were there I believe really liked it, cause my second party, just 3
weeks after, had triple the number. Electronic music had rung a bell here,
deconstructown, and it was making waves.
From then (I will spare you boring long details about parties and clubs and
the scene here -- unless you're interested) the whole going out and dancing
electronica has been MAJORLY guided and dominated by "idm". µ-ziq, aphex
twin, autechre, lfo, sweet exorcist, tortoise, kreidler, etc are as known
and recognized in our dancefloors as much as any other 'big' electronic
music star or dj.
Of course I am not implying that we only have idm. With time and
information, other dj's came up in town and started doing their own thing.
You see, here in my city we don't have all those professional-style,
mega-clubbing things. We like it really independent here. Every weekend we
have a party or lounge going on, but all of them are self-produced
free-of-obligations type of events. The worst thing for us here is to go to
mega parties with "famous" dj's....this, we leave for the people who don't
know any better.
I can say we have a stable, long-lasting, solid scene in which good music in
valued more than the hype. Parallel to that, we have a
larger-in-numbers-but-smaller-in-mind second scene of people who like to
dance but have no interest in actually finding out more about the music.
Another great aspect about our scene here is that there is very little
ghettoization due to the fact that people from all 'tribes' tend to converge
in "idm" nights. We have hip-hoppers, funkers, gays, lesbians, punks, indie
kids, clubbers, flubbers and all types mixing and talking/dancing.
What I am most proud of is the fact that here, in Brasilia, horizontal
dancing is as valid and respected as
all-out-fling-your-arms-wide-bang-your-head moving.
