I picked up a noteworthy release the other day. It was Beaumont
Hannant's new single "Psi-Onyx" on GPR. I've been a Beauhannant fan
since his "Taste Textures Vol. 2" release and since all subsequent
releases have all been to my liking, I didn't hesitate to pick up this
single when I saw it in the store.
But when I brought it home and dropped it in the CD player, I was quite
suprised with what I heard. Instead of the melodic ambi-techno style of
past releases, I was greeted with dark-acidic techno reminiscent of
Autechre's 1994 LP "Incunabula."
A quick glance at the credits explained why. Richard Brown, one half of
the Autechre duo, co-produced and engineered the single. Plus, Autechre
does a full fledged remix on the b-side.
For Beaumont Hannant, this is a bold new direction and one that IDM
fans will greatly appreciate. I certainly do. A must-have for Autechre
fans.
