Mike's right, it was a very good live set (although I wonder how well some
of the new stuff I heard will translate to the domestic sphere, if you know
what I mean). Observations:
There was one bit that blew me away. He took the beat that'd been playing
all through the track, and pushed up the tempo to very very fast, but it
ended up sounding much slower than it had before, because the kickdrum,
which had been there all along for accent on the one, ended up becoming
the pulse. According to Missy, who was watching MP's actions, this was a
big mistake that he was upset about.
I think MP uses a program to transpose whatever he plays on that keyboard
of his to the correct key in real time (such beasts do exist, yes?). There
were times when he seemed to be hitting keys randomly, but he never went
off-key. In fact, at one point, his elbow hit some keys accidentally, and
apparently he liked the sound of it, 'cause he kept hitting those same keys
for a while (with his hand, though).
Here's a setlist, to the best of my recollection (note that I don't have
'Bluff Limbo' or the "Phi*1700" EP, and I don't know the Auteurs remix
project well enough to identify tracks from it):
[Fast track with breakbeat, followed by Atari crash]
[Bleepy funk job that Mikebee mentioned]
Mu-Ziq Theme
[New uptempo track, a filtered distorted drum number]
[Another slower track, begins with guitar]
Medley:
Phi*1700 (with Atari crash in the middle) -> Iesope -> Tango N' Vectif
The medley was followed by three or four fast tracks, one of which had
a killer breakdown into tribalish percussion. All in all, I liked his
set much more than I expected to.
