Shit, Ryan, I have no _idea_ what I spin. Everything from
house to hardcore... Here's an annotated fragment of a setlist that I
used (not in this exact order, mind you -- it's bad enough that I even
wrote track titles down) this last weekend after getting my head
rearranged by Baraka:
Akira Sountrack - Mutation (intro)
Lots of deep rumbling monk chanting to get things rolling. If techno
artists spent half the time this demented genius did on their work,
the stores would be overflowing with masterpieces.
Vainquer - Lyot (Basic Channel)
If ya don't got this, ya don't got techno. Feel the deep boomclap and
the dum-dum-da-dum-dum. A quintessential Teutonic body-rocker.
Maurizio can go wibble around with lo-fi silliness for the rest of his
life and I'll still worship him for this track.
Innersphere - Vernal Equinox (Sabrettes)
Rising noises like blades on stone. Harsh stone white. Menace and
darkness but spring is in the air. Hope? I hope so.
Red Planet - Cosmic Movement (Red Planet)
Prophet my ass! Pete Namlook never had an original idea in his
life. Lush distorto strings with the deep boomy rush of seafoam into
space in the background. Can you hear the caenobytes whispering in the
background?
Source Experience - Mental Rider (R&S)
Case rides the shuttle. A sunspot festival. Shrieky gated noises over
acid and arpegiattion. Much to fall down and go boom. Ouch! Are those
clouds overhead or is it the bulk of the Galactic Sound Enforcement
Arcology dreadnought blocking out the stars?
Inky Blacknuss - Blacknuss (Sabrettes)
We're all doomed. Dark dark dark and darker. Feel the boom in the
background, see the shockwave rider approaching. Boom, he's past!
leaving a trail of dark whispers at the edges of your vision. The
soundtrack to seventy-two consecutive hours of awareness.
Olographic State - The Day After (OOBE)
A sound system killer. Bass so deep it rattles the fillings, a funky
beat to tie it to, but it's all dark and empty. An empty water tank,
fifteen skeletons, and a roll of duct tape.
Felix Da Houscat - Thee Morning After (Reload)
Always a great track to throw viciously down on the box whilst
declaring "This ain't house!" Ahh, but it thinks it is. That Felix!
Psychick Warriors of Gaia - Dust [at the Crossroads] (Kk)
Another tribal tiger passing as a housecat. Those handclaps sure have
some snap to them for hide that's destined for a handbag.
Insider - D.R.E.A.M.S. (Music Man)
Old-school boom boom boom music. "Dreams...dreams...dreams...dreams..."
I'd like to know who taught this guy to filter boulders. Music so
thick it'll knock your teeth out.
Hardfloor - Reverberate Opinion (Music Man)
It's a jug band, except everybody's done 500 mics of prime blotter and
gotten confused. The jug player hoots into an empty chasm, the
washboard player screws around with his sister and her 909, and the
broom player's chewing on his rubber bands instead of twanging
them. Like a digeridoo song only without the digeridoo.
Aphex Twin - Digeridoo (R&S)
Likewise. Droneyoneyoney on and on until that breakbeat kickicks. Hold
on for the breakdown! Wait, wait, wait, here it is and booom... it's
off again! Unstoppable after four years, it's a monster of a whale of
a sonufabitch of a track. Wham!
Accelerator - Accelerator 4 (Reload)
Some semi-haaahdcoah as a big-up to the Bozeman massif. It's mean,
it's nasty, but it's only 135 BPM. Still, it's got the Jeff Mills
flava strapped to a four-on-the-floor boomclap.
Voodoo People - Manala (Sabrettes)
Woo! Throw those hands up in the air! It's happy... or something.
Dance around and be silly and happy but remember that nasty old pit
bull you thought had rabies? He's peeking around the corner!
Robert Armani - Up Remix (ACV)
"We're gonna tear this motherfucker up!" 'nuff said.
So there you have it: conclusive evidence of brain damage or a load of
pretentious crap. It's your choice, but pick carefully. If you don't,
you could end up just like me!
