Music review! I'm not feeling objective, but this is the first time in a
while that I've bought an assortment of cds, so I'll just share my
subjective little feelings about them.
I picked up Dopplereffekt's _Gesamtkunstwerk_ recently. It's not very new,
but I haven't heard much commentary on it. Those who are interested in
Dopplereffekt: it's a compilation of their previous vinyl releases,
according to the web page. It's minimal electro with the occasional vocal
samples, not a ton of variety. If you've heard any of these songs, you know
what the rest of the cd sounds like. I like it, but also I don't sit and
listen to this cd the whole way through. Good, but drags.
I also got I-F's _The Man from Pack,_ which has some catchy tracks, but
also left me a little underwhelmed. I'm not sure what about it fails to
kick my ass, but somehow, it just doesn't.
Kit Clayton's _repetition and nonsense._ Everybody seemed to love this,
from reviews and top-of-1999 lists, so I may just be stupid. However, this
one also left me underwhelmed. I think this just isn't my kind of techno,
and thus I am prevented from getting excited. There is pretty good variety
within the tracks, but I kept hearing different filters and sound effects
that annoyed me. It's fairly classy and lush techno, though, so people out
there into the dub-flava-secretly-inserted-into-techno sound will probably
like this. I think I just hate dub.
Also I bought a small stack of Funkstorung-y vinyl. Aemic Beta, which I
take to be the sequel to the Aemic Beats thing of last (?) year. No, I
don't do my research, but whatever. Go buy! This album makes me happy,
because I am a funkstorung-listening, tDR picture disc-liking lamer. Am I
correct in my interpretation of the nifty graphics that Michael Fakesch did
one side, and Andre Estermann, the other? This is good.
I have the MAS version of Chris de Luca's _Unknown_ ep. Other people have
recommended this. I am recommending it. Give in to your lemming instincts,
be a follower, and buy buy buy! You know what it sounds like: it sounds
like Funkstorung stuff. So it's not trailblazing, but it's pleasant. Buy,
lemming!
Finally, there is Funkstorung's Sonderdienste, which is all old. However,
perhaps you are like I was, looking at it in the store, and asking
yourself, "Is this good?" I am patting you on the shoulder and saying,
"This is pretty good," so now you have the guidance that I did not. Now you
can go buy it, pretend you've had it for a long time, and be one of the
Funkstoriscetti. Also you will have vinyl, which makes you cool! You didn't
know that? It does!
On to my question: I like the Ester Brinkmann real audio song on
Urbansounds. I like the wav files of Ernst #1 on the Ernst webpage. I guess
this means I am a Brinkmann-liker. What do I do? I was in Amoeba, whilst
buying all my cds and records, and saw their big hunk of Brinkmann records.
Because they were techno records, they were required by law to all look
exactly alike, so I had no idea which single one to buy. I'm dimly aware of
this A/B, C/D, etc. naming scheme, but are the records wildly different? I
want the one that goes "click click click" because, I am realizing, I am
anti-dub.
