Well, this has always been a problem with Volume's collections. Sometimes
it feels like the artists just dump to them their surplus tracks they don't
bother to use on their own releases. And on the contrary, sometimes there
have been real gems you can't find everywhere else. Like for example,
Volume 3 (1992) had some outstanding tracks from Orbital, LFO, Moby and
(then mostly unknown) Depth Charge, each of which alone would have justified
the purchase of the collection. Also Volume 5 with Secret Knowledge and
Sabres of Paradise, and so on. But I have to admit there's a lot of duff
stuff also, especially now when they have started to publish their Trance
Europe Express/Trance Atlantic collections. All the worthwhile tracks from
the techno/ambient acts (well, quite a lot of them) are now there, and the
actual Volume collections are left with pointless, derivative indie guitar
pap I won't bother myself with anymore... Not to generalize again, there has
still been some great songs from Spiritualized, Tricky, Wagon Christ, etc.
But to get to the point: yes, I was also a bit disappointed with Trance
Atlantic - the selection of the tracks just seemed too patchy - but only
initially. After a few repeated listening everything started to fall into
their places, and there were also many interesting acts I hadn't heard
before. Yeah, maybe there was some filler, but as a whole I was quite
satisfied. And of course there was again a booklet with its interviews and the
background insight for all the tracks, so I really wasn't disappointed with
this one. Just give it one more chance :)
