For some excellent fluting, check out Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He popularized the breathy flute-singing style where you kind of sing into the flute while playing it. You've heard it before. It sounds cool. Roland Kirk also does a whole bunch of stuff where he is playing 2 or 3 reed instruments at the same time and sometimes he uses slide whistles and things for weird sound effects. I'd check out "We Free Kings". Its kind of straight ahead with some curves thrown at you here and there. The highlight here is thje title track which is a sort of cover of the christmas tune "we three kings". Killer flute solo on that track. In later albums he explored funkier more syncopated rhythms and borderline psychedelia... echoey flute sounds and that shit. Speaking of stuff of that ilk, I should also mention Donald Byrd's Electric Byrd album. I don't recall the name of the flute player on this album, but i do recall that he consistently rips shit up on each solo he takes. He employs a lot of echo on his flute too so it ends up being really psychedelic... kind of like the rest of the album... highly reccomended. There is one other flute player I wanted to mention, but can't remember at the moment. Maybe I'll get back to you on that later. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "[alland.byallo]" <alland@humbledesign.com> Date: Tuesday, October 8, 2002 11:57 pm Subject: [idm] flute-centric jazz

I'll second Aaron's RRK recommendation, and add mine for Yusef Lateef and Herbie Mann (Mann is maybe too straight-ahead to be "i"). best, wb --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't know how flute-centric it is, but some of the early Gil Scott Heron albums, that feature Brian Jackson on flute, are great. He is a wicked flute player and he really freaks it. Check 'Winter in America' and I believe he's on selected tracks on 'Pieces of a Man'. In any event, every Heron album is the bees knees. phil raffaele absorb ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.P.L'asthme Fawn" <ignorantdancemusic@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 6:37 AM Subject: Re: [idm] flute-centric jazz
