I don't know anything about Hotline, other than that searching for it seems to
result in little of significance, so it seems to have gone bye-bye.
What I do know is that all us file-sharing people are going to have to move to
Gnutella clients at some point in the future. Unless some similar but better
P2P network is invented to replace it, Gnutella is the only thing going at this
point that no one can shut down. Even Soulseek is not invincible; especially
now that so many Audiogalaxy people have hopped on, it will get noticed
eventually.
It's harder to find what you want on Gnutella, unfortunately, because there are
fewer people using it. Fewer people use it because it's harder to find what
you want. Funny how that works... What would make the jump easier would be if
Nir could somehow build Gnutella into Soulseek, so that sharing your files on
Soulseek also shared them on the Gnutella network. If that were possible, and
he did it, then it would go a long way towards encouraging the adoption of
Gnutella. Something tells me that's not possible, though.
What I really think, though, is that people using Soulseek should also run a
Gnutella client. Just share your files on the network - it's not that hard,
especially if you already have broadband.
If you want more info on Gnutella and the available clients, you should go
check out
http://www.gnutellanews.com/ - the Mac is underrepresented; 2 Mac
clients exist, and they're both actually just Java, but it's better than
nothing... And for those of us using Linux, we don't have to worry about
trying to make that linux soulseek hack function - plenty of linux Gnutella
clients! I prefer the cross-platform LimeWire, myself, though if you're still
using Windows for some reason, Gnucleus is the best there, I think.
Please people, work on the switch to Gnutella! At the very least, run a
gnutella client in the background and help the network grow!
