this was an absolutely great time. huge props go out to carl craig and crew for arranging this with the city of detroit. amazing weekend. im pretty sad im missing derrick may and hawtin this evening..but im still glad i attending the other days. sounds i really enjoyed: d wynn. fucking smooth house set... got the crowd groovin in the afternoon. stacey pullan. the headliner of friday nite... damn! every where you looked people were dancing... from ages 3 to 80 i saw everyone getting their groove on..even the police! tikiman was amazing. does anyone know where i can find more of their material besides the rhythm&sound material??? dj assault vs. dj godfather... for those of you who dont like booty...fuck off. these guys know how to put on a show! didnt play as much ghetto/booty as expected...but dropped a lot of electro favorites and got the crowd jumping ectomorph live pa. amazing. enough said. look out for m_nus-yellow by hawtin. the mp3 is sweet as hell... i sorely missed out on grabbing the vinyl at the show. also look out for the return of +8 with jochem paap's newest release: plus0872: electric deluxe. -miked --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'll be there all 3 days (as much as possible), prolly in blue jeans, a FAX, 313@Hyperreal or somesuch T-Shirt. I'm about 5'11", 205#, very short dk.brn. hair (bedhead/slightly spikey on top), close cropped beard, glasses. <<I must have missed the corporate bashing bit. Many corporations sponsor events. What's your point? Are you saying Carl deserves getting canned because he worked with the city and sponsors?>> I guess that would be silly. I did get a little carried away with the picturesque language to the point of naivete, albeit no more naive than Richie Hawtin with his "can't we all get along? it's about the music" spiel. Anyway, with all your guys' responses in mind, I'm left with two points (and I'll try not to call anybody "the Devil" this round, but no promises): (1) Richie asks who could ever replace Carl Craig. I will venture the blasphemy that his shoes could be filled (in his role at the DEMF I mean). He deserves massive kudos for being the first to organize the DEMF, but if he fucked up meeting the obligations of his contract (which you have to admit is at least in the realm of possibility), then any number of people could replace him and do just as good a job. I thought this year's lineup left much to be desired (although like I said before, it's a free party so one can't complain). If Craig's job was to represent Detroit, he failed. He passed up a lot of local talent for comparable talent from far away. Not to mention electro, which is half of Detroit's scene, was vastly underrepresented. If Craig's job was to represent electronic music, he failed. Whole genres of music, like jungle and trance, were practically nonexistent. If Craig's job was simply to book some amazing electronic acts (without representing anything but himself), then he succeeded. But hell, I could've come up with just as amazing (and more representative) a lineup, and, given hundreds of thousands of dollars, implemented it. And there must be thousands of people in Detroit who know more about techno than I. It's not like Craig is lassoing up a bunch of obscure diamonds in the rough from the depths of the underground. Look at the acts at this event: Laurent Garnier, De La Soul (what is De La doing at an EMF in the first place?), Carl Cox (despite the no show), etc. This is hardly an underground affair that would require the cache expertise of a local label guru. (Admittedly Carl Cox is not the most expensive DJ in the world, but he is the second most expensive.) I agree that it will be a sad day indeed if they book a bunch of commercial crap next year. But what can you do? It's their money; it's their call. Hawtin is acting like Craig's dismissal is a huge shot in the groin for "the music" (by which he surely means underground music--Moby/Oakey/Fatboy/Mr.Rock are music too [barely]), but I disagree with him. It's nice if corporations want to sponsor our shit, but we shouldn't expect them to or rely on them to. The whole point of "keeping it real to the underground" (or whatever) is staying away from big money and big politics, and Craig gave up his affiliation with these underground ideals when he signed a contract with Ford, Bacardi, Miller, and whomever else (appropriately enough the "Pop Culture Media" group). Their charity is nice, but we shouldn't cry if we don't get it, because that only reinforces their dominion. Ain'a? (2) Most people hear about problems like these and automatically assume that it's the evil corporations who are to blame. Isn't it possible that PCM is telling the truth, that Craig really did fail to meet his side of the contract? I guess it's a moot point as long as Craig's suit is pending, but I've got my money on the corporations. (And if their lawyers are any good, which you can rest assured they are, they probably programmed subtle loopholes in the contract so they could legally toss Craig at the drop of a hat.) I don't know exactly what happened, and nobody really does (well, a few people might, but we won't hear it until court transcripts are released). It's all too easy to just assume that this is the result of foul play on the part of the sponsors. But until the dust settles, I see no reason to prefer that assumption over its antithesis, namely that Craig brought this on himself by not playing by the rules established by the corporations that pay his (enormous) bills. I guess I'll leave this with the closing lyrics on Craig's finest album from a few years ago: "Paint will be spilled with the color of blood This blood signifies all the minds that will be lost in the revolution This is not a revolution against governments It is a revolution against ignorance" Ah yes, the platitudes of art. Viva la revolution. But first I've got to do something about this recent and inexplicable urge to purchase a Ford automotive... I'll have to hit up my friendly neighborhood Ford dealer right after I finish this refreshing Miller Lite. Tsss. Gurgle gurgle. Ahhh! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I hopped onto the email-your-gripe bandwagon and got a letter back from Carol Marvin which varied somewhat from those I saw posted on 313-l. She said she sensed that I wanted to know details (which, btw, wasn't the impetus of my email, but I did stress that I couldn't pronounce judgment as I DIDN'T know details) and didn't hesitate to mention that the "contracts...were hardly the issue...but was something the media had chosen to focus upon". While she didn't come right out and SAY the issue was creative differences, she certainly made it clear that it wasn't about Carl being late on contracts AND that the differences ran deeper than that. When I combine this with an interview she did on a local PBS DEMF special (I think it aired last Sunday via the Flint, MI.channel - WFUM ?) where she said that next year's DEMF would "build on the base already there...and expand on ...business opportunities...and making a much wider appeal to the whole 'Detroit party' community", I take it to mean that there's a stinking good chance that commerciality "on the whole" is what the DEMF may be headed toward in the future. While I will have to wait and see until next year when the jury comes in, I'm betting this is the case. And speaking of betting, *my* money is on Carl. Most of the corporations in general (with the exception of using bits here and there for commercials) don't have a great track record for making great 313 music or starting/supporting labels and formats which do. Carl Craig does. AND he seems to have somewhat of a clue as to the business end of things (DEMF 2000/ Planet E) in general. Somehow, siding with Carl doesn't seem so much of a bandwagonesque concept at all - even if I don't know all of the gory details. He's already earned the benefit of the doubt in my book. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, a few noteaables were not included (or chose not to participate), but last year Richie Hawtin played a sold-out show in the freakin' ballroom of the hotel all of my friends stayed at - no joke. I anticipate more of the same this year. J~

Stuck-up snobs everywhere trying to bring everyone else down with their holier-than-thou attitude. I didn't let it bother me, though. I had a good time. While there were certainly plenty of raver-types, I certainly didn't think they overwhelmingly dominated the crowd, and most everyone was very friendly.

You knew the lineup before you went. Yeah, so there wasn't any IDMish stuff. If you weren't interested in seeing Detroit house and techno, why did you go? If you were interested in seeing Detroit house and techno, there was plenty of it, and I never really had trouble finding something I enjoyed amongst the four stages. If you ask me, it was all in the mindset. Stay home next year, and find something else to get excited about instead, I suppose. Eh whatever. Young people who like techno? Bring 'em on. It was a little disappointing how clueless most of the crowd were when Auxmen came on.

The stuff I was chuffed to see was thinner on the ground but: 1. Mad Professor. Brought tears to my eyes 2. Stewart Walker. Brilliant live set, best I've seen him done. 3. Ron Carroll and Boo Williams -- if you don't like house music you won't care, but OH MY FUCKING GOD. I laid in the grass with friends for all of Ron Carroll, staring up at the blue sky, and all of us were flat-on-yer-back jacking to the music. Probably looked like a bunch of fish flopping in the mud. 4. T1000 main stage. Most people who play hard techno are irritating and boring. Alan is always musical even as he hits hard as nails. 5. Last minute Sonic Groove tag team -- Franky Bones, Adam X, and Heather Heart. They were having fun, the crowd was well up for it, and it was a beautiful day. 6. Deep Chord. Deep Chord. Deep Chord. And the afterparties were lush. I saw Vladislav Delay and Herbert. Nuff Said. Also: Terrence Parker at the Camilian Cafe. I've seen him play probably 10 times, and no two times are alike. Seeing him in his home town, with his hometown friends and fans is always amazing. Also Also: Ron Trent at the KMS party played a deep house set that was like dying and going to heaven. I was so physically knackered I sat down for the last hour or so, and drifted on the edge of sleep to amazing, beautiful, soulful, funky music. Ron Trent was so good, I went back to the backroom where Kevin Saunderson was playing, and after two tracks went back up front. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The Festival itself was not as 'vibey' as it was last year. Part of the problem was things like endlessly running the same commercials in a loop on giant screens by all the stages -- a Vibe Killer if ever there was one. The other problem was a function of the lineup. I don't have any real complaints about the people who played, who are all worthy DJs and producers. Rather, the line-up was top-heavy with banging techno. It seemed like you had to search not to be pummeled by hard techno. Highlights for me: Mad Professor -- basically he was DJing with effects, with a couple of singers. This was my first set at the festival, and my eyes filled with tears at points. T Linder -- he played some techno, but about 2/3 of his set was really nice Electro. Deep Chord -- in a lot of respects the most extreme, challenging set of the festival. If you know their records, you know they're pretty loopy and dubby. For DEMF they appeared with a bass player and drummer. The drummer was a frickin human 909. There was a sense that it was TOO loopy, but if you surrendered to it it was beautiful, as was their video projection. Stewart Walker -- Stewart's a friend of mine, so I'm biased but: Stewart played the best set I've seen him play, to the largest, most appreciative audience he's probably ever had in the US. Radioboy/Herbert -- Brilliantly done. The way he performs -- sampling live the sounds of him destroying consumer products -- is unique. And his manic stage presence really shows you can be entertaining and play challenging electronic music at the same time. AUXMEN -- in a move that took tremendous balls, the Aux-Men performed a set of the old-school classics that marked the genesis of Detroit Techno: Kraftwerk, George Clinton, Afrika Bambaata, and Shari Vari. The playing was all live except for rhythm tracks. All of us headz in the back were in heaven, but the majority of the crowd acted baffled. AUXMEN could have gotten a huge reaction if they'd done more of their own banging electro, but I think they really were trying to educate people about the roots of techno, and have a funky party at the same time. The only other sets I was really front and center for was DJ T1000 on the main stage, who is so good with hard banging techno that it made the other 75 DJs banging it at the festival look weak. The last minute fill-in job that the Sonic Groove crew did on the main stage was great too -- Frankie Bones, Adam X and Heather Heart tag teaming. They were chuffed to be on the main stage, and their enthusiasm was contagious. I shook hands with Frankie at the end of his set on the Miller stage and he was obviously ecstatic to be playing at DEMF, in any capacity, and during the main stage set you could tell he was about to burst. It's a little incongruous to see a dark banging techno guy busting melon grins at the decks, but in this case the fun they were having translated to the crowd. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
